Anthology:Drawing and Sculpture by Ann Norton

Drawing is defined as a graphic representation by lines of an object or idea, or a delineation of form without reference to color. For Ann Weaver Norton, it was a design diary and placeholder of sorts for her ideas until she was able to translate the two dimensional drawings into envisioned three-dimensional works. From a line charcoal study of a mountain-like structure to brilliantly colored works from her Tibetan series, her drawings exhibited no hesitation and stood strong and separate from the subjects they represented. Norton introduced color perhaps in imagining the translation into brick or other natural materials. She continued to draw throughout her life, clarifying her vision for the works even while working three-dimensionally in wood and bronze. Drawings remained a part of her process.

Enrique Chavarria's World of Fantasy

The era of digitally concieved images and film may in some way take away from the world Chavarria created for himself. Whether his ideas inhabit his studio or live deep within the recesses of his mind they meet the true definition of fantasy. Chavarria who was born in Mexico in 1927, is surrealistic in nature and similar to those of Max Ernst, Giorgio di Chirico, and Hieronymus Bosch, as well as those of Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo, both of whom Chavarria met in Mexico. Chavarria's work reveals great technique and familiarity with the styles of surrealism but with an intensely personal journey.

The Tenth Saint by Daphne Nikolopoulos

When not working as the Editor of Palm Beach Illustrated, the talented Daphne Nikolopoulus is writing under her pen name of D. J. Niko. The journalist, author, editor, and self-proclaimed modern nomad has spent the better part of two decades traveling the world. As a former travel writer and zealous adventurer, Nikolopoulos has visited remote spots on six continents, many of which have inspired her novels. She has a particular passion for deserts and the nomadic way of life and has spent extensive time among various tribes in Africa and Asia. The Tenth Saint is her debut novel in a series of archaeological thrillers. Her second novel will be released June 2013.

Festival of Trees Community Days

The Sixth Annual Festival of Trees comes to the Palm Beaches benefiting the beautiful and historically significant Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, located on the Intracoastal waterway in downtown West Palm Beach. The rare palm gardens will be transformed with over 30 spectacularly decorated trees with the theme of music. From classical to the classics and contemporary the Palm Beach's most dedicated and talented designers work to bring the themes to life. Join us for the most memorable occasion of the Holiday Season. The Holiday House Boutique at the Festival of Trees is the place to shop for true treasures from the houses and estates of the Palm Beaches. Ben Aronson Exhibition

Noted American painter Ben Aronson will exhibit works from his private collections and up to 13 new pieces. Aronson's most recent exhibitions have included paintings representing several periods of the artists work including his recent inquiry into the realm of finance. Players such as Wall Street traders and auctioneers participate actively in the commodification of art, bringing about risks as well as rewards. Despite the apparent intimacy of the painted compositions, Mr. Aronson creates a palpable distance between subject and viewer. We look directly at traders on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, but they do not acknowledge us. A group of three figures huddled together in a dimly-lit restaurant seem as disengaged with one another as they are with the viewer. The works, both large and small in scale, are rigorously painted and capture the ever-changing light and shade as it both conceals and articulates the forms of streets and buildings.

Ben Aronson received both his B.A. and M.A. degrees in painting from Boston University. He has been the recipient of four National Academy of Design awards and has also taught graduate school seminars at Harvard University. His work has been exhibited and collected widely throughout the United States, most notably the Boston Museum of Fine Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Denver Museum of Contemporary Art.

 

Literacy Days in the Gardens

A Community Enrichment Student Program

The Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens is pleased to present its 5th Annual Literacy Days. In partnership with the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County, Palm Beach County Library, and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office; this one of a kind program provides over 600 students and 30 teachers a new and creative approach to reading, writing and language arts education. Authors, illustrators, and librarians inspire and empower students grades K-3 with poetry readings, book making,, creative writing activities and the unique beauty that is the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens. Literacy Days in the Gardens is made possible through the generosity of Kids' Dreams Inc., Cynthia F. Sulzberger, and funds raised by the Festival of Trees. Volunteer opportunities available.

The Collector Series: Exhibition No. 1

Guest Curator David Miller will take us on a journey with "The Collectors Series: Exhibition No. 1, a selection of paintings and sculptures on loan from private owners. The Palm Beaches are home to some of the finest collections of art in the world and more often than not, works are rarely seen by the public. This exhibition will feature an interesting group of works from the walls of collectors from New York to Palm Beach. Picasso, Matisse, Milton Avery and Malvina Hoffman are just a few that will be in the intimate Gallery at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens. Join us as we discover the back story for each work on its way to being part of a private collection.

David Miller, past Board of Trustee President of the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens curates the exhibition that is sure to be full of surprises!

Homage to Picasso

The Homage to Picasso portfolio represents a unique event in the history of printmaking. In the early 1970s, with the intent of honoring the fertile genius of Picasso and his role as a catalyst for many different styles of twentieth century art, German critic Wieland Schmied and German publishing house The PropyläenVerlag initiated a call for prints.

Seventy-one artists were asked to take part. They came from seventeen countries, different generations, and worked in widely varied styles. The artists include Roy Lichtenstein, Enrico Baj, Robert Motherwell, Niki de Saint Phalle, Andy Warhol, Louise Nevelson, Wifredo Lam, Robert Indiana, Joan Miro and many others. While numerous artists directly referenced Picasso in the prints they created—such as Richard Hamilton, Pol Bury and David Hockney—others like Jim Dine, Dan Flavin and Frank Stella made works in their own styles with no Picasso-related content. The entire portfolio contains seventy-one prints.

There are many interesting anomalies connected with this portfolio. The Homage to Picasso portfolio was officially issued in 1973, but individual prints bear dates ranging from 1971 to 1976, depending on their actual completion date. The catalog for the portfolio, which is out of print and unavailable except in certain libraries, does not include many prints completed after the official date. There are three editions of this project created—an edition of 30 for museums and galleries and two editions (each of 45) for the PropyläenVerlag and the Patheon Presse.

Eco Adventure Day

$5 per child

This unique hands-on experience teaches environmental education, conservation, and stewardship.  Through this program the Gardens has created permanent community partnerships with other like organizations such as Arthur Marshall Foundation,  The City of West Palm Beach Office of Sustainability, Preservation Foundation, Solid Waste Authority, Beekeepers Association, Resource Palm Beach County Library, Palm Beach State College, Together we provide a comprehensive environmental science adventure for students grade 1-5. Volunteer opportunities available.

MAY 2013

"Transformations: The Art of Yvonne Parker"

Yvonne Parker was born and raised in Southern Germany, with a dual nationality of French and German.  Her father, an artist, encouraged her to explore multiple media.  From age sixteen, Parker studied porcelain painting in Switzerland and Art History in Germany.

Parker’s “Fragmented Beauty” series, incorporating porcelain and ceramics, has been exhibited throughout the United States.  Recent exhibitions include a solo show at “The Armory Art Center,” FL, a museum exhibition at “The Columns,” PA, and most recently Parker showed her work at “Art Palm Beach,” an international, contemporary art fair, in West Palm Beach, FL.  In addition, a show “Yvonne Parker & Friends” is scheduled for summer 2011 at ArtSpace at the PaPA, Pennsylvania.
