Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens News Release


“A Brush with Adventure-Images from Far-Away Places” Oils and watercolors of Edward C. Michener

October 22- November 22, 2008

West Palm Beach, FL—Palm Beach and Maine Resident Edward C. Michener, age 92, continues to travel the globe recording moments on his journeys that later become the bases of his work.  Steadfast in his commitment to his craft Michener continues to create visually interesting works.   These works will be on display at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens October 22 thru November 22, 2008.

The artist, a Pennsylvania native, is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Art.  He majored in illustration, studying with Henry C. Pitz and Thornton Oakley.  He began his career as an illustrator and art director for a Pennsylvania magazine.  After three years, he switched careers and entered the advertising profession as an art director for an agency. Following service in World War II, he opened his own full service agency in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where he listed clients from Chicago to the New York area, including one in the U.K.  His agency was a member of the prestigious American Association of Advertising Agencies.  He also served on the Board of the Philadelphia Council. 

During his professional and business career, he maintained a continued interest in the fine arts and painted as time permitted.  He also served two terms as President of the Art Association of Harrisburg.  His work was accepted in various juried show, including the Philadelphia Watercolor Annual at the Academy of Fine Arts, the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, the Pennsylvania “Art of the State” and the Palm Beach Society of the Four Arts’ Annual Exhibition of Contemporary American Art
He had held numerous one and two man shows throughout the East, including two previous shows at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens.  In the past, he served on the President’s Council of the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, Florida. 

The Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, Inc. is a recognized 501 (c )(3) operating foundation established in 1977 by the prominent sculptor Ann Weaver Norton (1905-1982).  The gardens are conveniently located at 253 Barcelona Road, at the corner of Flagler Drive in West Palm Beach, FL. The rare palm and sculpture gardens, exhibition galleries and artist studio are currently open Wednesday-Sunday. 11- 4 p.m.  Admission for Garden visit is $5.00.
